Important Announcement: Datacentre migration to AWS Tokyo on 23 August 2025
Effective Date and Time: 23 August 2025 at 02:00 AM UTC
Summary of Changes: We will be migrating the BitMEX infrastructure from AWS Dublin to AWS Tokyo on 23 August 2025. With this move, we expect to increase the number of active market making participants resulting in improved liquidity across our range of contracts.
Service Downtime: To complete the migration, all BitMEX services will be temporarily unavailable from 02:00 to 07:00 UTC. This includes:
- Website and mobile app
- Trading (including via API and WebSocket)
- Deposits and withdrawals
If the migration is completed ahead of schedule, we will bring the platform back online earlier than planned. Once completed, we will reintroduce the system in cancel-only mode for at least 15 minutes before trading resumes. For real-time updates, please visit status.bitmex.com.
Deposits during downtime will be processed and credited once the system is restored.
Impact on Your Integration: There will be no changes to REST API or WebSocket connection URLs. However, they will route to AWS Tokyo after the migration. No client-side reconfiguration is required. However, given the change in physical location, we appreciate that you may want to update your trading infrastructure for optimal performance.
The API connection to AWS Tokyo will be available for testing before the migration. Details will follow in a separate announcement.

FAQs
When will changes begin, and how long will services be down?
The BitMEX team will be migrating its datacentre from AWS Dublin to AWS Tokyo on 23 August 2025. The change will begin at 02:00 AM UTC with trading suspended from 02:00 UTC to 07:00 UTC. Migration may be completed and trading may resume before the end of the window.
Will there be downtime during the migration period?
Yes. During the migration, the BitMEX website, mobile app, all trading APIs, deposits and withdrawals, and the WebSocket will be unavailable.
Will this migration include any API changes?
No. There will be no changes in API during the migration.
Will server instances be different in Tokyo?
The migration will be a “lift and shift” of the current Dublin setup to Tokyo, meaning similar server types will be used.
Will client URLs change after the migration?
No. The existing REST API/WebSocket URLs will point to AWS Tokyo after the migration. Users will not need to update their URLs, but may prefer to relocate their services for optimal performance.
What support coverage will be available during the migration?
We will provide regular status updates at status.bitmex.com. Our Customer Support team will be online and answering user queries in real time. We will also have relationship manager communication updates to our VIP clients directly.
Which Availability Zone (AZ) will your infrastructure be set up in?
Our matching engine will be in apne1-az4, while the rest of the services will be spread across AZ1, AZ2, and AZ4.
If I use preferential connectivity and want to connect from the Asia datacentre after the migration, do I need to white list IP addresses in advance?
Yes, you will need to provide us with new IP addresses before the migration.
Are there any plans for VPC peering or custom placement groups?
There are no immediate plans for VPC peering or custom placement groups, but these will be considered post-migration.
What testing opportunities will be available prior to the migration?
Several weeks before migration, Websocket and REST API services will be available in both Dublin and Tokyo for connectivity and API testing. Initially, Tokyo data will be delayed due to cross-region routing to the Dublin matching engine.
